Early 2020.
Giancarlo Toniutti and James Wyness met several times in various European places to compose
drookitarlùp, a 23' piece for 42 players
with mostly folk, extraeuropean, or self-built and unusual wind, string, friction and percussion acoustic instruments.

An orchestra of specialised players,
The Kafkian Cladistique Claque,
gathered with the authors at Andrej Bagar Theatre in Nitra, Slovakia.
They rehearsed time and again,
then both composers conducted one performance each with their specific interpretation of the original score.
Each session was recorded and finally brought home to be mixed by the authors.

the quiet project

the quiet project is the ongoing development of several years research into instrument design and building, from hand-made bowed psalteries to tiny percussion ensembles and vibrating cigar boxes to resonant domestic objects and materials activated and energised using small battery driven motors.

The unamplified music is quiet yet complex and differentiated as the unique sound of each instrument finds its place within the ensemble. The instability of the activating devices and their power sources present the listener with an ever changing sound field.

Performances are site-specific in that individual sound source can be easily moved to take advantage of the architectural features of a given space.

Twelve track album available for streaming and purchase on Bandcamp

This album is a departure from previous works. The pieces are shorter, more linear and less dense in texture, each short piece making use of no more than three or four sounds. Nonetheless they still sit within the domain of electroacoustic and musique concrète.

Sound sources include hand-made, found and conventional instruments, home-made electronic devices, field recordings and recordings made with body microphones

These are abstractions of studies carried out in the natural world - recollections of dreams, walks, walks within dreams and dreams within walks. Released May 22, 2020
