The Rural Space Agency
For many years I've been developing and delivering various projects based on research into the natural and human history of Jedburgh (inasmuch as we can separate these), the Jed Water and the land adjoining it, examining the river basin and the people who live there, the problematics of landscape, agriculture, small-town life and politics. I began with sound recordings and text, then with photography, short film and performance, often collaboratively. These activities are now all gathered under a new name, The Rural Space Agency. The outcomes have been and still are widely differentiated: from solid and permanent; accumulative and ongoing; fluctuating and unstable; transient and undocumented.
The Rural Space Agency found new energy in the Fallow Land commission, encouraging me to organise sustainable events for local people, such as Get Jed Fed, a food growing initiative which overcame a measure of predictable resistance before finally establishing itself at two sites in the town. The plan for Get Jed Fed in 2027 is to look at the creative possibilities around land set aside for food growing, creative placemaking in other words, working with artists to incorporate elements such as sound, sculpture and architecture into the design of the growing spaces.
