Still Life

The Corner

Even if I am experimenting I like to work methodically so I decided quite early on to categorise my still life experiments into three areas of activity: colour, form or assemblage, ie the shapes and composition of the objects and how to work with the table or tables in my studio. I could add light to those three but I have a good diffused natural side light and haven't yet taken to artificial lighting slight remains as constant as natural light can be. In fact the whole business of getting the table right - the angle, height of shot, colour of cloth, backdrop, is perhaps the most problematic of all and I still haven't found all the solutions. I do often wonder how other still life photographers solve these matters.

Here we have three corner shots, all jpegs straight from the camera (these are test shots after all) with slightly different arrangements of four simple elements. For me the most successful is the first shot. The apple distracts the eye and the angles are too obvious. The second shot uses a wider aperture which throws the apple slightly out of focus and I think this enhanced depth of field pulls the eye around the image more effectively. The light however has changed in number three, for the better I think,  and this is one of the most interesting aspects of working with natural light, the changes between shots and a measure of unpredictability which perhaps goes against the grain in a studio setting. But it teaches me to look ever more closely which I believe is one of the cornerstones of becoming a better photographer.

When we dream we redistribute time, space, people and events. Erotic dreams are frequently more confusing than usual.

This small sepia and colour series continues my work with documentary warfare photography based on a very few simple cuts. Surrealist elements offer a more nuanced reading of the war imagery.

War Series 1

A photo-collagist has to find pictures. I browsed around the local charity shops and found several large photo books on the theme of warfare. This simple series uses that material. The original photos were often very well taken by obviously seasoned professionals. The field of war reportage is hugely problematic, a discussion for another day. Each image has no more than three cuts.

A warm welcome to my blog

Thanks for visiting my blog pages. I've been busy reorganising all my work across music, film and photography. My new blog, which I hope to update weekly, will offer readers insights into new projects, diary excerpts, updates on research audio and video links to projects both new and in-progress. As always, comments and discussion are welcome.

To get us started here's a picture from my recent photographic studies on still life. It's something of a test shot to see how things look, which is why so many of us do photography after all is it not? After Christmas 2020 I made a space for table photography in the outer room of the studio with backdrops and soft natural light. To begin with I've split my research into experiments in form, colour and distribution. This colour study, inspired by Jan Vermeer incidentally (who could have guessed?) uses a polished engraved brass Indian tray with found plastics and a red cushion. All under natural light coming in from the right. I'm still experimenting but I reckon there's a series or two in the pipeline, of which more soon.
